Merthi Subbangudigy Estate

Originally a British plantation, Merthi Subbangudigy (more easily referred to as “M.S. Estate”) has been part of the Balanoor Plantations (owned by the Kuriyan family) since the 1930’s. Today, the estate is run by the fourth and fifth generation of the family, Ashok and his son Rohan.

Located in the Chikmagalur growing district, this farm has long supplied Josuma with washed Arabica.  A sibling estate (Yelemadlu) supplies us with some of our best lots of washed Robusta (Kaapi Royale and Parchment-AB).

FEATURED OFFERINGS:

We have four microlots from the 2024 harvest:

[SOLD] Lot #141: Merthi Subbangudigy Estate, BBTC variety (5 bags). Developed in-house by the Bombay Burmah Trading Company, BBTC is another cultivar unique to India. Not quite as rare as the Kent variety, but also not widely found. Cupping Notes:  Sweet lime w/ berries & brown sugar

Lot #142: Merthi Subbangudigy Estate, Cauvery variety Special Prep (6 bags). This is the third or fourth time that we’ve brought this lot (although the last purchase was five years ago). Since then, the roasters who tried the bean and saw how popular it was with customers kept asking “When will you bring this again?” Cupping Notes:  Varied citrus (orange, lemon & mandarin) w/ baking spice

Lot # 144: Merthi Subbangidigy Estate, Kent variety (8 bags). Temperamental, like a pinot noir grape, the Kent variety can be hard to find in the US. Most of it is spoken for by leading roasters in Europe and Asia. Every few years, we get lucky and can secure a small lot of this wonderful bean. Cupping Notes:  Citrus and plum w/ caramel, chocolate & cocoa.

Lot #145: Merthi Subbangudigy Estate, S-795 variety (8 bags). Most of our large lot offerings are the S-795 variety, given it’s crowd pleasing tasting notes. Most of M.S. Estate’s S-795 are spoken for by European and Asian roasters, so this an unusual small S-795 lot. Cupping Notes:  Orange and lemon w/ chocolate & stone fruit.

HOW TO BUY:  Call (650-366-5453) or email.  Review our Purchasing Green Coffee FAQs to learn how we handle green coffee transactions.

*For the microlots, we give first priority to roasters that already buy our coffees.  Roasters that have never purchased from us (or last purchased a few years back) should consider our larger lot offerings.
