Badnekhan Estate

Located high up on Merthi Mountain, Badnekhan Estate is blessed both by altitude and ample shade. This, along with heavy use of raised drying beds, is a big reason that beans from this estate regularly win Flavor of India/Fine Cup awards (the Indian equivalent to Cup of Excellence, held at Europe’s Specialty Coffee Expo). In recent years, this included a National First Place in the Best Arabica category.

The family that manages Badnekhan (and also another plantation called Devon) has owned the farm since the 1940’s.

Badnekhan, which means “forest land” in the local language, primarily grows S-795 and Selection 9 beans but also has smaller blocks with more unusual varieties.

FEATURED OFFERINGS:

Our primary offering from this farm is a larger lot of S-795 variety Mysore Plantation-AB beans (cupping notes: caramelized sugar, chocolate, toasted walnut w/ orange peel.)   Since Badnekhan is very reliable producer, this bean is ideal for roasters looking for a single-origin coffee that can be offered year-in, year-out.  You won’t find much year-to-year variation in flavor notes.

We also have one microlot from the 2024 harvest:

[RESERVED] Lot #148: Badnekhan Estate Selection 9 Variety (9 bags).  Badnekhan Estate has won numerous Flavor of India/Fine Cup awards (the Indian equivalent to Cup of Excellence) for its Selection 9’s, one of the premier Indian cultivars. With much of what the top estates produce already spoken for by European and Australian buyers, Selection 9 beans can be hard to find in the US. For the sixth year in a row, we’ve been fortunate to secure this variety from Badnekhan. Cupping Notes:  Caramelized citrus w/ brown sugar, stone fruit & berries.

HOW TO BUY:  Call (650-366-5453) or email.  Review our Purchasing Green Coffee FAQs to learn how we handle green coffee transactions.

*For the microlots, we give first priority to roasters that already buy our coffees.  Roasters that have never purchased from us (or whose last purchase was a few years back) should consider the larger lot offering.
