Harley Estate

Located in the Manjarabad growing district, Harley is a former British plantation that has been growing coffee since the 1860’s.  Today, Harley Estate employs a polyculture setup that is common for many Indian plantations, cultivating areca nut, cardamom, coca, pepper, rice, and vanilla in addition to both Arabica and award-winning premium Robusta.  We source washed Arabica along with some superb Kaapi Royale (washed Robusta) from this farm.

D.M. Purnesh is has run this farm for nearly 40 years.  Starting several years ago, his daughters (Chandini and Tapaswini) started to play integral roles in the farm’s operation and sale of beans, making them the fifth generation of their family to manage the plantation and making Harley one of the few women-run coffee farms in India.

Purnesh’s family also owns Kalledevarapura Estate which his brother runs.

FEATURED OFFERINGS:

Our primary offering from this farm is a larger lot of Selection 9 variety Mysore Plantation-AB beans (cupping notes: citrus, plum, green grape w/ caramel & almond.)  One of our favorite varieties. Selection 9 has long been one of the premier Indian cultivars. Very hard to find in North America as European and Australian roasters lock up much of what the best estates produce. This variety traces back to the Ethiopian Tafarikela bean and displays a fruitiness and acidity that is unusual for an Indian bean while still being recognizable as an Indian coffee.
