Merthi Subbangudigy Estate

Originally a British plantation, Merthi Subbangudigy (more easily referred to as “M.S. Estate”) has been part of the Balanoor Plantations (owned by the Kuriyan family) since the 1930’s. Today, the estate is run by the fourth and fifth generation of the family, Ashok and his son Rohan.

Located in the Chikmagalur growing district, this farm has long supplied Josuma with washed Arabica. A sibling estate (Yelemadlu) supplies us with some of our best lots of washed Robusta (Kaapi Royale and Parchment-AB).

Offerings from this farm include:

  • [OUT OF STOCK] Merthi Subbangudigy Estate, BBTC variety. Cupping Notes:  Berries, citrus. Touch of milk chocolate, caramel.
  • [OUT OF STOCK] Merthi Subbangudigy Estate, Cauvery variety (Special Prep). The estate used a proprietary processing technique (we’ve been asked to refer to it as “special prep”) designed to produce a cleaner bean with better clarity compared to traditionally washed coffees. On the cupping table, it reminded us of Cracker Jack. Unique, yet still approachable. Cupping Notes:  Caramel, chocolate, nuts.
  • [OUT OF STOCK] Merthi Subbangudigy Estate, Chandragiri variety. Chandragiri (also known as Selection 13) is a Villasarchi derivative that was first introduced in 2007. Starting with our 2018 Origin Trip, we noticed that Chandragiri had become the cultivar that most excited growers. Cupping Notes:  Lemon, orange, caramel. Touch of green apple, chocolate.
  • [OUT OF STOCK] Merthi Subbangudigy Estate, Chandragiri Peaberry. Cupping Notes: Herbal. Lemon, caramel. Hint of chocolate.
  • [OUT OF STOCK] Merthi Subbangidigy Estate, Kent variety. Temperamental, like a pinot noir grape, the Kent variety can be hard to find in the US. Most of it is spoken for by leading roasters in Europe and Asia. Every few years, we get lucky and can secure a small lot of this wonderful bean. Cupping Notes:  Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, caramel, nuts.
